I don’t understand art. I liked these photos though.

I went to the opening night of the new Urbis exhibition. Saw a live art piece. Got very confused and wondered who the girl was opposite me (she looked familiar). I don’t understand art. There was a few good things. Cassette music as image. People as buildings. Angles and ran over cats. 

Odd. I’ll stick with design. But go check it out.

It was a sticker pack in some Kellogs serials. I assume Rice Krispies now I think about it. I remember putting these stickers on my ‘ghetto blaster’ when I was four or five. Me and my friend Katherine used to sing/make music/bang pots into it (it has a microphone!) though never very well. My friend Sarah pointed out that my style of graphic love isn’t particularly different now, and I tend to agree. It’s a brilliant thought, that. It gives me a feeling that it’s always been in my bloodstream. Nice thought especially when occasionally I get thoughts and felings as to whether or not I’m in the right career path. Course I am, it’s just things pull and push you about.

I’m in a moral dilema. Less moral, and more I don’t know how to go about a problem I’m having. I planned on revisiting my Proton project, which is a handle for a series of design projects involving science at the forefront as I had a number of new ideas for it. But recently, I became the art director with Oyunga for Pulp, the student magazine. Yesterday I was given the plan of action and it will be based in science and some of my new ideas will work very well in the magazine. 

Now, here is the dilema. I would like to create the ideas under my Proton belt, because it will run with my ideas, and that it can be used in my degree show. I’d also like to make it larger this time. But, then, do I reuse the same ideas, for Pulp? Can I use the same idea twice? I’ve never thought of this. I could just do it for Pulp but honestly, I feel I will lose a lot of marks and kudos or whatever, because it will become illustrative in nature due its context of being in a magazine and becoming headers and cover design. 

But then again, it will give it a purpose, and will be able to go into my portfolio and be counted as a Live brief. Which is for the best, really. But I don’t want to lose marks because I didn’t market it correctly. It seems a weird thing to discuss and figure to, but I know the education system is built on rules and the “we can’t mark you for potential. We can only mark you for what you’ve done” ideals. 

This is what has made me worry lately.

If this isn’t a stab into proving you should just keep pushing and pushing what you do until the absolute second, I don’t know what is. 

Incidentally, it’s made me think, isn’t the internet a wonderfully weird thing? How in the course of 20 years its gone from nothing but text, and ascii if you want images, to streaming tv, videos, photos, communities, the ability to control something 3000 miles away. It’s spawned some of the most annoying things the world has ever met, and has allowed the rise of some of the most creative talent you’ve never heard of (honestly, forget designers and artists. Some of the wildest ideas have been thought up by your 14 year old brother and his friends). Will I be the first generation to ride the technology wave throughout my whole life without getting off? Is that possible? My gran uses the internet, but not like I do. Will I use it in the future, but not like my children do?

He also made me question whether I have dyspraxia or not. I think I do. When I was working on Proton, I did a lot of maths. And it hurt. It was weird. It honestly felt like there was too much trying to fit into my head and it made me frustrated in a way I only get frustrated when I can’t do something and I try my hardest. A sense of futility. Like when I played Crash Bandicoot Racing with my ex. But it is weird because I got As in GCSE Maths and Statistics.. Anyway, I feel I should go check it out at the good old learning unit of Manchester Met.

But I query, where was the rest of third year D&AD? Chumps.
